As I mentioned on the first episode of our podcast, I am currently growing out my natural hair color, which is gray. It is a platinum, almost white gray color, and I’m really excited about it.
My natural hair used to be dark brown, and I have been dying it, religiously, every three weeks, for at least 30 years. I knew this was going to be a long journey no matter the route I took, and I decided that I was willing to lose a lot (A LOT) of length and undergo a lot of processing time—roughly 16 hours in the salon over three appointments—to lift the dye out and approximate my new natural color.
As you can imagine, all of the lifting and color correction has caused a lot of damage to my hair. The new hair growing out is strong and healthy, but the previously dyed hair is constantly breaking. Every time I brush my hair, it looks like a little cat crawled on my clothes.
I am trying my best to limit further damage now that I am no longer color correcting. However it’s a battle every day with putting special potions and conditioners and oils on it, and I also take supplements to help it grow.
There’s something undeniably captivating about healthy white or silver hair. I’m inspired by the women around me embracing their natural color, whatever that is.
For anyone who, like me, is at the beginning (the ‘does she have a cat or what…?? stage) of the colored to gray transition, see below for a list of my current, not to be missed favorites!
